I’ve had my eye out for original homemade ornament ideas for the holidays, and I finally found what I was looking for! These 3-ingredient birdseed ornaments are simple, adorable, and actually attract songbirds.

We followed this tutorial from One Little Project, and it worked perfectly. The author was worried the ornaments wouldn’t hold up in warmer whether, but they did just fine in our San Bruno winter. It’s worth it to follow the advice to make the holes as far away from the edge as you can; within a few days the birds had chipped away at the edges of the ornaments enough that a couple of the thinner ones broke off their strings. My kids watched the ornaments all morning when we initially put them out and were disappointed not to see any birds, but within a day or two word got out and our tree was a hotspot for small songbirds!
